Game Architecture and Design (2024)
An Overview of the Two Game Prototypes That Were Created This Summer Semester
Last semester, the Chair of Media Informatics and Entertainment Computing once again offered the course Game Architecture and Design. The course teaches the theoretical basics of game design and game development. In the practical part of the course, students then develop their own game concepts in small teams, from the initial idea to the playable prototype in Unity. During this summer semester, the two games “Gathered by the Light” and “Elysian: Forest of Souls” were developed by the students on the course, which are presented below:

“Once upon a time, on a dark, moonless night, a strange light appeared in the forest. It didn’t take long for the moths to take notice. A few hours after her parents went away to investigate the source, a young moth began to worry. With nothing but the fading glow of her wise firefly companion, she stepped foot into an unfamiliar forest for the first time in her life. Determined to find her parents, they embark on a journey towards the ominous light in the distance.” Gathered By The Light is a fast-paced, jump and run 2D platformer game that focuses on momentum-based movement. The concepts of light and dark are central to the game's story and gameplay. Congruent with these themes the protagonist is a young moth who is compelled to investigate a bright mysterious light in the distance of a dark forest with the help of a firefly that can be controlled to light up the environment. Along the way the young moth gets progressively better at overcoming challenging obstacles like long stretches of water, thorns, spider webs and even a lurking predator by gradually unlocking more abilities. Additionally in the separate Speedrun Mode the game’s focus shifts towards beating record times that get displayed on an online leaderboard.

Elysian: Forest of Souls
