Description

The main topic of this project is the question how a multi-touch table can be used in the waiting areas of hospitals in order to induce and influence communication and social interaction among children and their parents waiting for their treatment. The project is based on a longstanding col-laboration between the Entertainment Computing Group and the Clinic for Pediatrics of the univer-sity hospital Essen, dealing with the research of new media technologies in the medical sector. In order to investigate how communication and interaction can be fostered by a multi-touch table, the first step is a situation analysis and the assessment of potentials and limitations of the setting. Sub-sequently, different scenarios and concepts will be developed and implemented in form of one or more evaluation prototypes. Goal is the development of a functional prototype as well as the con-duction of a user study to evaluate the result. Thus, the project will also include the examination of psychological theories and concepts regarding communication and user interaction.

Requirements

Participating students should show high involvement, interest and enthusiasm regarding the idea of the project and the work with innovative interaction concepts in the sensitive context of pediatrics. Furthermore, a reliable communication with partners from the hospital is obligatory. Basic programming skills (Java) as well as knowledge about psychological research methods and empirical work are required.
