Social Facilitation in Digital Games

Room:

LE 332

Date:

Thursdays, 16:00 - 18:00

Type:

Lab Course (Forschungsprojekt)

Description

This Lab Course deals with the exploration of socio-psychological phenomenoms of social facilitation in the context of digital games. Does social presence of other persons have influence on the performance of a player? Which impact does the presence of virtual social entities (e.g. NPCs) have? Which factors are influencing the effect? To answer those and other questions the concept of social facilitation will be scientifically observed and in addition concrete relevant research-scenarios will be deduced within the scope of digital games. After that the plan contains the development of a prototypic exploratory framework with variable parameters, which allows the exploration of social facilitation on different game conditions corresponding to the defined research-questions. In addition, the realization and evaluation of an empirical study to examine the effect and its impact on player experience with the aid of the prototype is part of the lab course.

Requirements

- good knowledge in programming (ideally knowledge of Unity3D) and/or empirical expertise (planning, realization and statistic evaluation of empirical studies) - interest in games and research on games - creativity and high motivation to participate actively and to extend your skills
